Will Grier Makes NFL Debut

Chicago, IL – West Virginia football is just over three weeks away, but tonight, many former Mountaineers got their season kicked off in the NFL.

Former Mountaineer quarterback and 3rd round draft pick Will Grier made his NFL debut tonight and although it started slow, he turned things around and looked sharp on his last couple of drives.

He completed his first pass attempt to running back Elijah Holyfield for a five yard pickup, then went in a slump completing only two of his next six pass attempts-one of which was an interception.

Grier threw the ball a little high on a drag route underneath, but the receiver didn’t make much effort to reach for the ball. There were also a couple of other balls that he threw really well that the receivers were able to come down with.

In the second half, Grier led the Panthers down the field which resulted in a touchdown pass to Holyfield on a wheel route out of the backfield.

He finished the game going 9/16 for 77 yards with a touchdown and interception. There’s no doubt that he was a little anxious and it took him a while to settle in, but once he did, it was the same Will Grier we are accustomed to seeing. He also displayed his mobility by scrambling out of the pocket for a 20 yard gain on the touchdown scoring drive.

The Panthers will face off against the Buffalo Bills next Friday in Charlotte. Grier’s favorite target in college, David Sills, is on the Bills roster fighting for a spot.
