WVU Awards Steve Sabins New Contract After Historic First Season

After leading WVU to an historic season in his first year at the helm, Steve Sabins has been rewarded with a new contract.

Sabins, who was promoted to head coach after the 2024 season when Randy Mazey retired, is now signed through 2031. His new deal is for about $3.675 million and includes significant raises for each year moving forward.

Under Sabins, West Virginia set a new record for wins in a season, won the program’s first-ever outright regular season conference title and advanced to the NCAA Super Regional stage for the second consecutive year.

Sabins was named the 2025 ABCA East Region Coach of the Year.

Overall, West Virginia finished the year 44-16 and made major top 25 polls for the ninth consecutive year, climbing into the top 15 in multiple polls to end the season.

WVU cracked the top 15 for both Baseball America and D1Baseball at No. 13 and 14, respectively. They also landed in the top 15 at No. 14 via Perfect Game. In contrast, the Mountaineers were placed at 17 in the final top 25 on the USA Today Coaches Poll.

The pressure is now on Sabins to maintain the national contender status into next season and beyond. To his credit, WVU has enjoyed great success in recruiting throughout the offseason so far.
