Despite having a strong resume, WVU basketball was not selected for the NCAA Tournament during Sunday’s selection show. The Mountaineers were not one of the 68 teams that heard their names called to participate in March Madness this season.

West Virginia amassed 19 wins this season with six Quad-1 victories, four ranked wins and three wins over top-10 opponents. CBS showed West Virginia as the first team left out of the tournament after the full bracket was revealed. As recently as this morning, the Mountaineers were projected to make the field.

The Mountaineers were ranked No. 51 in the NET and missed out on the tournament over other bubble teams like North Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma and Xavier. North Carolina was just 1-12 in Quad-1 games, while Xavier was 1-9.

WVU was considered a lock to make the tournament following the regular season, but a loss to last-place Colorado in the Big 12 Tournament put the Mountaineers back on the bubble and, ultimately, off of the bracket.

This is the second season in a row WVU basketball has missed the NCAAA Tournament and the third time in the last four years. This is the first time since 2022 that WVU head coach Darian DeVries has not made the tournament, taking Drake in 2023 and 2024.

Seven Big 12 teams made the tournament, led by conference champion Houston. Iowa State, Texas Tech, Kansas, Baylor, Arizona, BYU all made the field.

getting beaten by the worst team in the big 12 sure did cost us.. that was a terrible terrible loss… how in the world did they over look a crummy team like that, and let them blow us off the court inthe second half.. it’s our own fault,, sad,, i wouldn’t play in the NIT if asked, the not interesting tourn. sad ending to a darn good season , but maybe next yr,, let’s hope devries sticks around and his son stays and is healthy.

Very disappointing end to the season. Apparently quad one wins do not matter and winning 10 games in a tough big 12 conference does not matter. Beating three top 10 teams also does not matter. Apparently, for West Virginia, you have to be just sort of undefeated in the big 12 and have a 21 win season or you will not be considered. This is great news for Iowa and Indiana that want plenty of time to negotiate with Darien DeVries

DeVries will make tracks if he can gain any traction off this mess. Wren should pull extension offer and see whether DeVries really has options, accept the buyout, and find someone with instructions to recruit/draft a more complete roster.

I’m so tired of hearing all season long how we’re going to lose our Bball coach to first Iowa and then Indiana and then this disappointment so if he is holding out for more money and prestige at WVU’s expense, let’s let him go and hire the new Drake coach as a replacement and move on…

WVU’s resume is way above the NIT. This snub is way bigger than 2007.
