WVU Defeats University of Charleston 94-61 in Exhibition
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia defeated the University of Charleston 94-61 in an exhibition game on Friday night.
Tucker DeVries led the way for WVU with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Javon Small (11), Jonathan Powell (11) and Amani Hansberry (11) also ended the game in double figures.
13 players scored for the Mountaineers against the Golden Eagles.
West Virginia’s starting five consisted of Small (G), Sencire Harris (G), DeVries (F), Toby Okani (F) and Hansberry (F).

Powell, a freshman guard, showcased his scoring ability, finishing with 11 points. Powell, who was originally signed with Xavier, is expected to see playing time this season. The Ohio native knocked down a pair of threes in the first half.
As a team, West Virginia forced 22 turnovers from Charleston, scoring 36 points from those. West Virginia out-rebounded UC 38-34.

Former WVU G James Long is the head coach of the University of Charleston. Long’s first year with the Division-II program.
WVU is entering its first season under head coach Darian DeVries from Drake. DeVries and his new staff completely flipped the roster as they only return rising sophomore Ofri Naveh. West Virginia brings top transfers DeVries (F – Drake) and Small (G – Oklahoma State) to lead the way with other adds being Sencire Harris (G – Illinois), Hansberry (F – Illinois), Toby Okani (F – UIC), Eduardo Andre (C – Fresno State), Joseph Yesufu (G – Washington State), Jayden Stone (G – Detroit Mercy) and many others.
West Virginia opens up the 2024-25 season against Robert Morris on Nov. 4. WVU will also have a closed scrimmage with a high-major team next weekend.
