WVU Football QB recruit Brodie McWhorter and Rich Rodriguez

The effort by Rich Rodriguez and his WVU staff to try to win over previously committed top 2026 quarterback recruit Brodie McWhorter has not gone unnoticed.

It’s even clear McWhorter himself is warming up to the idea of playing for Rodriguez. He has West Virginia as one of seven schools he’s still considering. Auburn, Colorado, Indiana, Mississippi State, Syracuse and Wisconsin are listed with WVU.

This positive news comes about a month after Rodriguez took a trip to Georgia to spent time with McWhorter. Prior to that, McWhorter surprised West Virginia fans by posting a screenshot that showed he had a virtual conversation with WVUโ€™s head coach. Both McWhorter and Rodriguez were seen smiling ear to ear in the screenshot.

McWhorter didnโ€™t add more context to his post, but included a simple caption that lends fans to believe the conversation was a positive one.

โ€œGreat talk with Coach Rodriguez,โ€ said the high coveted quarterback.

On Jan. 23, McWhorter posted a picture with Rodriguez to thank him for stopping by his school.

Backstory on West Virginiaโ€™s pursuit of McWhorter

McWhorter revealed that he was withdrawing his commitment to the Mountaineers on Dec. 2, the day after West Virginia announced the program was moving on from Brown.

McWhorterโ€™s decision came after he posted a picture with Brown and โ€œdoesnโ€™t even feel right. Canโ€™t thank this man enough โ€“ LEGENDARYโ€ as the caption for his initial reaction to the news of Brownโ€™s firing.ย

But now despite McWhorterโ€™s close relationship with Brown, it appears heโ€™s open to becoming a Mountaineer once again and willing to hear what Rodriguez and the new WVU staff could offer him.

McWhorter is a 6-foot-2, 195-pound quarterback out of Cass High School in Kingston, Ga. He was on campus for a visit for WVUโ€™s home finale against UCF.ย

Two major national recruiting outlets rank McWhorter as a four-star while one awards him only three stars.

To put McWhorterโ€™s recruitment in context, he has offers from Auburn, Arkansas, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Indiana, Louisville, Michigan State, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oregon, Purdue among others.

And in addition to those offers, Alabama, Clemson, Louisville, LSU, South Carolina and Tennessee have also expressed interest. Syracuse also sent him an offer recently on Jan. 19.

McWhorter was the second commitment for WVUโ€™s 2026 class when he announced back in June.
