No. 21 WVU Wrestling Falls to No. 5 Northern Iowa for 3rd Straight Loss

A fast start propelled No. 5 ranked Northern Iowa to a 29-10 victory over No. 21 West Virginia inside the WVU Coliseum Friday night, giving the Mountaineers their third consecutive loss and fifth in the last six matches.
Friday was West Virginia’s sixth straight match facing a ranked opponent, as the Mountaineers are now 1-5 during the stretch, with the lone win coming Jan. 20 at No. 20 Oklahoma.
The Mountaineers (8-6, 2-5 Big 12) dropped to 0-9 all-time against Northern Iowa dating back to 1982.
Jett Strickenberger and Peyton Hall continued their strong performances for West Virginia, with both picking up victories over ranked opponents.
Strickenberger, ranked No. 10 at 125 pounds, defeated No. 22 Trever Anderson by a 10-5 decision for his fifth straight win over a wrestler ranked in the Top 25, giving the Mountaineers an early 3-0 lead.
Hall improved to 24-0 on the season with a 15-2 major decision over No. 18 Jack Thomsen at 165 pounds. The No.3 ranked wrestler at 165, Hall is just four wins away from tying Greg Jones for the most in program history at 128.
No. 30 ranked Brody Conley was the lone other Mountaineer to secure a victory in the match, edging No. 16 Jared Simma by an 8-5 decision at 174.
Northern Iowa picked up four bonus-point victories to pull away, capped off by No. 15 Lance Runyan’s pinfall win over Wilson Spires in the heavyweight match.
The Mountaineers will be back in action on Thursday when West Virginia travels to Utah Valley.
