According to Allan Taylor of Metro News, West Virginia University’s administration has met with and interviewed three potential candidates for its head coaching vacancy.

Luke Fickell of Cincinnati, Neal Brown of Troy and current West Virginia defensive coordinator Tony Gibson have interviewed with athletic director Shane Lyons and the expectation is that an announcement will be made by the weekend.

Former Ohio State president and current West Virginia president Gordon Gee has had a heavy influence on the coaching search and is likely pushing for former Ohio State assistant Luke Fickell.

“Ultimately, he’s all of our bosses, so for him to be involved and showing his passion for sports is important to any candidate,” Lyons was quoted in Taylor’s article.

Neal Brown, the heavy favorite amongst the Mountaineer fanbase, has ties to the Big 12, having served as the offensive coordinator for Texas Tech under Tommy Tubberville from 2010-2012.

Tony Gibson is considered a long-shot to become the next head coach at West Virginia according to Taylor despite the recent outpouring of admiration from former and current players.

“That’s the real reason you enjoy coaching – knowing that the guys you recruited and work for have your back,” Gibson commented.
