BREAKING: West Virginia set to hire Neal Brown as head coach

Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports reported Neal Brown to be named as the new head football coach for the Mountaineers.

Prior to becoming a Mountaineer, Brown spent the last four seasons as the head coach of the Troy Trojans. As a first-time head coach, he took over a Troy program that had one winning season in five years.  Brown quickly turned it around.  In the last three years, Brown was 31-8, including a Sun Belt Conference Championship and three-straight bowl wins. All three were the only 10-win seasons since joining FBS in 2001 had big road wins over LSU (2017) and Nebraska (2018).

Brown was a receiver in his playing days. Born in Kentucky, he became a Wildcat (10 rec 48 yards 1 TD) before transferring to Umass (37 rec 414 yards 2 td) for his final two seasons. He was a walk-on freshman at Kentucky to be a part of the Hal Humme Air Raid offense and Mike Leach was the WR coach his first year.

Brown is familiar with the Big 12 as the offensive coordinator at Texas Tech for three years. In 2010 and 2012 while in Lubbock, Brown’s units compiled Top 15 numbers in total offense.

Some have considered Brown to be an “Air Raid guy”; however, Troy ran the ball on 58% of their plays last season and had a thousand-yard rusher three out of the last four seasons. Looking over his time at Troy, he adjusts to his personnel and gets the best of his players.
