WVU OC Chad Scott Calls CJ Donaldson ‘Best RB on Field’ from Penn State Game

WVU Football RB CJ Donaldson

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – WVU offensive coordinator Chad Scott had some big words for his lead running back CJ Donaldson while evaluating the offense against Penn State.

Acknowledging the offense has plenty to work on, Scott also made sure to note that he was very impressed by Donaldson. “I thought he was the best running back on the field,” Scott said without even blinking. Those are some big words when you consider he was sharing a field with Penn State’s stud running backs like Nicholas Singleton.

Scott then explained how everyone expects Donaldson to be better this season, but his progress and potential really stood out after getting to watch him against one of the best defenses in the country. Donaldson ran for 81 yards on 18 carries for an average of 4.5 yards per rush. He scored one of WVU’s two touchdowns in the game and also caught a pass for three yards.

As Scott and head coach Neal Brown have continuously mentioned throughout the offseason, Donaldson has his body in better shape and should take a jump this season. The fact that he gained experience at the position last year, something he didn’t have prior to the fall of 2022, and that he’s finally healthy again are also factors that should lead to Donaldson being a more polished player moving forward.

Scott referred to Donaldson’s performance against Penn State as his best game as a Mountaineer, even above his break out game in the Backyard Brawl last year.

“From a physicality standpoint, that was probably his best game thus far.. he never got tackled by the first defender. He played a lot of plays and his adrenaline was going. I thought he was the best RB on the field,” Scott said to fully evaluate how Donaldson played.

People need to get a grip around here. There’s a thing called a scoreboard; check it out once in a while.
