WVU takes Game one over Georgia Southern
The West Virginia Mountaineers (3-2) won the first of a three-game series over Georgia Southern Eagles (1-3) 5-1.
Darius Hill put the Mountaineers on the board first in the third. The lefty hit a line drive opposite field over the third baseman’s head scoring Tyler Doanes from second to take a 1-0 lead.
West Virginia added two more runs in the seventh when TJ Lake bunted down the first baseline and first baseman Jason Swan threw wide right as Tristan Hudson crossed home plate. Lake advanced to third on a wild pitch, then Tevin Tucker put a bunt down the first base line and another throw to home plate and Lake sled head first safely for a WVU 3-0 lead.
Alek Manoah left in the seventh with one out and a man on first. Manoah finished the night with eight strikeouts and gave up two hits and no earned runs. Sam Kessler came in for the save and struckout five.
Ivan Gonzalez drove the ball deep into centerfield with two on and scoring Hill from second and Hudson hit a sacrifice fly into left field bring in Marcus Inman from third to give the Mountaineers a little bit of breathing room for the final six outs.
Kessler shut Georgia Southern down in any hopes of a comeback as the Mountaineers win game one by four.
