WVU Womenโ€™s Basketball JJ Quinerly celebrating

WVU Women’s Basketball crushed Arizona State on Wednesday, Jan. 22, winning 89-59 on the road behind scoring outbursts from JJ Quinerly and Kylee Blacksten.

The win marks the 900th in program history.

Quinerly dropped 29 points, tying her second-best performance of the season. Blacksten scored 24, setting a career high and clearing the 20-point barrier for just the second time in her four year Mountaineers career.

The No. 16 ranked Mountaineers (16-3, 6-2 Big 12) enjoyed one of their best shooting performances of the season, making 50 percent of shots from the field, 42.9 percent of those from three, and 24 0f 27 from the charity stripe as Arizona State got into foul trouble late.

Despite playing more than 2,000 miles away from Morgantown, West Virginia took control early, ripping off a 10-0 run in the first four minutes that forced a Sun Devils timeout. The break in the action didn’t do anything to cool off the Mountaineers’ shooting, as they led 28-9 at the end of the first period after converting on ten of 15 shots in the frame.

Arizona State managed to keep things respectable on the way into the half, outscoring the Mountaineers 14-8 in the second period, but West Virginia stormed out of the gate once again to begin the second half, establishing a 25 point lead on the back of a 15-3 run.

Sydney Shaw and Jordan Harrison both hit double digits late, while senior transfer Sydney Woodley continued to see key minutes off the bench.

WVU Women’s Basketball continues their Grand Canyon State road trip at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25 when they face the Arizona Wildcats in Tucson.
