WVU Women’s Basketball Rides Early Success Past Iowa State

WVU Women’s Basketball picked up a double digit win over a strong Iowa State team on Sunday, Jan. 19, prevailing 82-68 in Morgantown.
The No. 20 ranked Mountaineers’ physical defense limited Cyclones star Audi Crooks to 13 points, her second-lowest scoring output of the season. Ringing Crooks up for four fouls in the first three quarters limited Iowa State’s ability to mount a comeback.
West Virginia (15-3, 5-2 Big 12) dominated the offensive glass 15-5 and won the turnover battle by a healthy margin as per usual, 25-12, all of this contributing to a 71-48 advantage in total shots taken for the Mountaineers.
Although they only drained 42.3 percent of their shots on the day, West Virginia made 11 of 19 shots in the first period, storming out to a 30-15 lead at the end of the frame thanks to a 20-3 run in the last five minutes of play Jordan Harrison and JJ Quinerly each dropped 20 points: Quinerly’s performance moved her into eighth place all time on the Mountaineers’ scoring leaderboard.
West Virginia rode that early success through the middle frames. While they led by as much as 26 points following a Quinerly three-pointer early in the third period, Iowa State kept the final score respectable with a strong fourth quarter.
Up next for WVU Women’s Basketball is a road trip to the Grand Canyon State, where they’ll face Arizona State and Arizona on Jan. 22 and Jan. 25, respectively.
