ASU Head Coach Bobby Hurley Pays Darian DeVries Big Compliment

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — For the second time this month, a coach from the other side of the country has heaped major praise on WVU basketball’s Darian DeVries.
Following Tuesday’s 65-57 win in the Coliseum, Arizona State head coach Bobby Hurley said he would cast his Big 12 Coach of the Year vote for DeVries.
“If my vote was today, I’m voting for Coach DeVries for Big 12 Coach of the Year,” Hurley said. “The job that he’s done here has been unbelievable. From where they were projected to finish and what they did in non-conference and everything they’re doing in our league is pretty special. This was a huge win for us and our program.”
DeVries has coached the No. 23 Mountaineers to a 13-5 record (4-3 Big 12) in his first season in Morgantown. With a roster full of transfers and while missing his son, Tucker DeVries for several weeks, DeVries has coached WVU to three top-10 wins over Gonzaga, Kansas and Iowa State.
Two weeks ago, Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd said he thinks WVU should be prepared to add a couple of years to DeVries’s contract given the job he’s done.
“Darian’s doing such a good job, he’s done an amazing job in his first year,” Lloyd said after beating the Mountaineers. “I know they’ve had some crazy injuries and he’s dealt with it. To be honest with you, their start has been pretty magical…If I were that guy’s agent I would have two more years on that contract right now.”
DeVries has done such a good job in his first year that his name is starting to be included in National Coach of the Year consideration. Last week, DeVries was named the Jim Phelan Award Mid-Season Coach of the Year.
DeVries and the Mountaineers go back on the road for a game at Kansas State Saturday at 6 p.m.
