For the second time this month, WVU basketball’s Javon Small has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week.

Small guided the No. 23 Mountaineers (13-4, 4-2 Big 12) to a win over then-No. 2 Iowa State on Saturday, scoring 27 points with seven rebounds, five assists and four steals.

“He’s just been incredible all year. I think he’s the best guard in the country right now,” WVU coach Darian DeVries said after the game. “I wouldn’t trade him for anybody.”

Leading 51-49 with two minutes left, Small scored 12 of the Mountaineers’ final 13 points to seal the win. That included a three-pointer with 42 seconds remaining to go up by eight and the dagger, a dunk with 21 seconds left to go up by 10.

“He’s playing at as level as high as anybody in the league,” Iowa State coach TJ Otzelberger said. “He deserves all the credit.”

This is the second time in three weeks that Small has won the Big 12 Player of the Week award. Small also won the award on Jan. 6 after leading the Mountaineers to an upset win at Kansas and a win at home over Oklahoma State.

Among the Big 12, Small is first in scoring (19.8), 11th in shooting (43.5%), third in free throws (88.7%), seventh in three-point shooting (36.1%), fourth in assists (5.2), sixth in steals (1.9) and first in minutes played (36.1).

Small and the Mountaineers host Arizona State tomorrow for a late-night game tipping off inside the WVU Coliseum at 9 p.m.
