After a call with West Virginia defensive analyst Casey Vance, 2022 running back/linebacker Ethan Hiester picked up a preferred walk-on offer from WVU. Despite scholarship offers from Glenville State, Dayton, Valparaiso, Clarion and Walsh, Hiester has decided to commit to the Mountaineers as a walk-on.

Hiester, a 5-foot-11, 200-pound athlete from Upper St. Clair High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is the first new commit for WVU since the duo of Justin Williams and Kevin Thomas decommitted on Wednesday night.

After visiting Morgantown for a camp in early June, Hiester made a trip back to town for WVU’s 38-31 win over Iowa State on Oct. 30. He’s picked up interest from schools like Pitt, Virginia Tech, Yale, Bucknell and Lehigh over the course of his senior season at USC, but he will walk on at WVU.

Hiester helped lead USC to a 6-5 season, racking up a team-leading 638 yards and six touchdowns on the ground, 139 yards and two touchdowns through the air and even threw for 65 yards and an additional touchdown. A two-way player, Hiester also added 45 tackles (19 solo), 4.5 tackles for loss, an interception, a pass defended and blocked three punts on defense.

With Hiester’s two-way ability, excelling on offense, defense and special teams, his way to making an impact early at WVU may begin at the special teams level.
