WVU Basketball guard Jonathan Powell

2024 guard Jonathan Powell officially signed with West Virginia, the basketball program announced on Tuesday afternoon. Powell is a 6-foot-6 recruit from Dayton, Ohio.

“We are pumped to have Jonathan joining us,” WVU HC Darian DeVries said. “He has terrific size and skill which gives him great versatility at both ends of the floor. He’s very self-motivated and has a passion and desire to be great.”

Powell recently requested a release out of his National Letter of Intent with Xavier. Powell is a top 125 prospect out of Centerville High School.

“The main thing that went into requesting out of my NLI at Xavier was mainly just I want a good opportunity to be able to play and compete,” Powell told WV Sports Now. “With that being said, it was a business decision I’d rather not speak too much on, just happy to be a MOUNTAINEER!”

In 29 games, Powell averaged 19.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.3 steals during his senior season. Powell shot 45% from the field and 39% from three as he led the Elks to a second-place finish in the state of Ohio.

Powell is the highest-ranked high school recruit WVU has secured since Isaiah Cottrell in 2020 and is the first Ohio recruit since Josiah Harris in 2022. With West Virginia adding Powell, the Mountaineers now have four scholarship spots available for the 2024-25 season.
