How WVU Football Could End Up in Big 12 Title Game

Are you saying there’s a chance? Well, if you’re asking if WVU still has a chance to appear in the Big 12 Championship Game, yes, there’s still a chance.

In fact, not only is it possible, the exact turn of events needed to make that happen is starting to become clear in the final weeks of the regular season.

No one was dreaming of a conference title when West Virginia crawled into conference play at 1-2 in turmoil following an embarrassing season opening loss to Penn State and a devastating blown game to Pitt. And fans were so frustrated after poor performances in big conference home games (with a viral moment sandwiched in between) that “Fire Neal Brown” billboards started popping up around Morgantown.

But none of that will matter if the Mountaineers are in Dallas playing for the Big 12 title and a spot in the College Football Playoff.

West Virginia currently holds a 5-4 overall record, but is 4-2 within the Big 12. This has WVU in sixth place in the conference standings in Week 12. However, there are only two schools with an actual better conference record than Brown’s Mountaineers – BYU 9-0 (6-0, Big 12) and Colorado 7-2 (5-1, Big 12).

So how does WVU need the rest of the season to unfold?

• West Virginia needs to win out
• Teams above WVU need to lose at least one game
• West Virginia would finish in the No. 2 spot in the conference standings due to winning multiple tiebreaker scenarios, such as record against common opponents and conference opponent win percentage.

But of course, the Mountaineers have to take care of their own business before worrying about the possibility of a chaos in the conference standings.

West Virginia will close the regular season with their first home game in almost a month against Baylor, a date with UCF at Milan Puskar Stadium and then a season finale trip to Lubbock, Texas to take on the Red Raiders of Texas Tech.
