WVU Football DL recruit Amir Leonard-Jean Charles

As the WVU football staff hopes to solidify its 2025 class with National Signing Day fast approaching, they will host a player who can argue as their top commit on Saturday.

Amir Leonard-Jean Charles, a four-star defensive lineman, posted about his return to West Virginia for the Baylor game on Friday morning.

“This weekend! Country road, take me home, To the place I belong, West Virginia, mountain momma, Take me home, country road!,” said Charles. He committed to WVU in June.

The 6-foot-4, 305-pound Lipscomb Academy product from Mount Juliet, Tenn. in the Nashville area is classified as a three-star by most national recruiting outlets, but does carry a four-star rating from Rivals. Charles is ranked within the top 30 Tennessee players by most outlets while Rivals has him at No. 14.

WVU has been pursuing Charles for well over a year. Kentucky, Michigan, Texas and Tennessee have been projected to be his top choices, per On3 Sports. However, Charles tells WV Sports Now that his final decision came down to WVU, Florida and Syracuse.

West Virginia’s pursuit of Charles is not random by any means. Beyond his talent, Charles’ mother is a WVU alum and was a Mountaineer athlete herself as a member of the swim team during her college days.

Charles visited Morgantown frequently throughout the past year and was in attendance for the season opener against Penn State.

Before committing, Charles’ offer list included major programs like Auburn, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Ole Miss, Purdue and Tennessee
