WVU WBB HC Mark Kellogg Fires Shot at Pitt After Backyard Brawl
Simply beating Pitt on the court wasn’t enough for Mark Kellogg on Tuesday night. After West Virginia’s 82-54 win in the 2024 women’s Backyard Brawl, Kellogg thew more dirt on the Panthers during his postgame press conference.
When asked why the WVU vs. Pitt rivalry isn’t currently scheduled to continue, Kellogg couldn’t resist the urge to share his true feelings.
“We would continue it, I don’t think they want it to continue. You would have to ask them,” responded Kellogg with a shot fired right to Pitt.

Kellogg’s comments are pretty easy to translate. West Virginia’s head coach is clearly accusing the Panthers of being scared to play his Mountaineers. History shows that Pitt has good reason to be worried about future meeting against WVU, too.
The Mountaineers have won seven straight Backyard Brawls and nine of the last 10, dating back to 2010. WVU’s win streak spans three different head coaches – Mike Carey, Dawn Plitzuweit and now Kellogg.
Pitt’s women’s program has also struggled so much that winning the Brawl doesn’t even end up being labeled a quality win for West Virginia. The Panthers finished the 2023-24 season with an 8-24 overall record and haven’t reached the NCAA Tournament since the 2014-2015 season.
Conversely, West Virginia is coming off back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and won a tournament game in Kellogg’s debut season last year.
The Mountaineers will be right back at it on Friday, hosting Texas A&M inside the Coliseum at 7 p.m.
