If you want versatility in a player, look no further than Obinna Onwuka. The four-star West Virginia recruit of the 2024 class feels his versatility allows him to excel at multiple defensive positions.

Onwuka, an Upper Marlboro, Maryland native who currently attends Charles Herbert Flowers High School, detailed his recruiting journey, how he would describe himself as a player and his talks with the WVU coaching staff during a conversation with WVSN.

Listed as an EDGE by most outlets, Onwuka says he’s willing and able to play wherever needed.

“I’d say I’m very versatile, I can fit in at any defensive formation,” said Onwuka.

He then expanded on why he’s a player who can easily adapt to any system.

“I’m only 225 pounds, so you can put me at OLB or defensive end and I’ll get the job done,” he said. At the end of the day, it’s all about getting to the quarterback for Onwuka, something the Mountaineers didn’t do enough of in 2022 and are striving to improve upon come the 2023 season, year before Onwuka could join the team.

Onwuka now hopes college programs like West Virginia realize everything he can offer. He says WVU is into him so much they have sent multiple offers his way and invited him for another visit of the campus. In addition to the Mountaineers, Onwuka reveals he’s been having serious talks with  several other programs. He wouldn’t actually say which programs he’s referring to, but Penn State and USC are on the list of prominent programs to extend him recent offers in January. Going further back, JMU, Marshall and Maryland also made Onwuka an offer

As far as what exactly he’s heard from the WVU coaching staff, Onwuka is confident West Virginia notified his skill and ability right away while watching his film. “They love my size and my film. They think I’d be a great fit for them,” said a West Virginia coach about Onwuka.

College won’t be just about football for this prospect. “Academics, the culture, and mutual support for students” are the main features of a school Onwuka will be studying before deciding where to commit.

While he won’t reveal which other schools he’s been hearing from and considering, stating there are too many to name, Onwuka is willing to offer the exact date he plans to announce his new football and academic home. Onwuka told WVSN he will be unveiling his college choice on May 20, locking in with a program prior to their summer camp and several months before his final high school season kicks off.
