A Look Back: WVU, Baylor Combined for Highest-Scoring Game Between Ranked Teams

It may have been a decade ago, but it’s still a record to this day.

Back on Sep. 29, 2012, so exactly a decade ago this week, 9th ranked West Virginia beat number 25 Baylor, 70-63. This was, and still is, the highest-scoring game ever between two ranked teams in the history of college football.

West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith threw for 656 yards and tied the Big 12 record with 8 passing touchdowns. Smith, who has been starting for the Seahawks this season, was recently inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame.

He remains as one of the most prolific players in school history as the all-time passing yards and passing touchdowns leader with 11,662 yards and 98 touchdowns. He played from 2009-12 before being a second round selection by the New York Jets
