BREAKING: Chase Illig Selected in 29th Round of the MLB Draft

Published

on

WVU catcher Chase Illig was selected in the 29th round of the MLB Draft by the New York Yankees. This makes him the seventh of eight players selected which sets a school record for the most players selected in one draft.

A native of Bluefield, Illig did not participate in the 2019 season due to a preseason injury. He is expected to play a part in replacing Ivan Gonzalez along with 2019 designated hitter Paul McIntosh if he returns to WVU.

If Illig leaves, WVU’s catching depth will take a serious hit as McIntosh would be the only catcher returning with considerable experience along with junior-to-be Connor Hamilton who has made 34 appearances over his first two years in Morgantown.  Illig is a redshirt junior, making him more likely to turn pro than a true junior.
