Former WVU running back Justin Johnson Jr. entered the transfer portal six months ago and is now committing to…a career in coaching. That’s right, Johnson will be the new running backs coach for a high school in his home state.

St. Pius X Catholic School announced the hiring of Johnson with a post on X (Twitter) on Saturday. Johnson, a St. Louis native, then added an emoji to confirm the news.

This career shift comes after Johnson entered the transfer portal on Dec. 10. At the time, Johnson’s decision to transfer was viewed as his way of looking for more playing time since it came around the same time Jahiem White publicized his plans to return to WVU.

But instead of trying to find a new college home to get more time on the field as a player, Johnson is going to be involved in football on the coaching side moving forward.

Johnson appeared in 28 games during his three-year stint at West Virginia. Johnson recorded 150 yards during the 2023 season on fewer attempts from 2022. Johnson does have one year of college eligibility remaining.
