WVU AD Wren Baker and Ross Hodge

Much is often made about how much a coach is getting paid and what the perimeters of his (or her) contract look like, but it was extremely important for Wren Baker to work Ross Hodge’s first WVU contract in a way that protected the program from the fifth coaching search in as many years.

After putting in a FOIA request, WV Sports Now received the full details of Hodge’s contract on Friday. And as expected the first year includes a massive buyout that should ensure Hodge sticks around for at least two years no matter how much success he may enjoy.

Hodge will start with a base salary of $2.8 million, which will then gradually increases by $100,000 each year until it reaches $3.3 for the 2030-31 season. But most importantly, Hodge’s buyout after his first year will be at 75% and require a payment of $9.15 million and would get kicked up to about $11.6 million if he reached an automatic extension. The buyout then moves down to 56% and $5.25 million after year two.

Hodge can also make more money by achieving several incentives throughout his tenure. An NCAA Tournament appearance would earn him an extra $20,000. He would then earn $30,000 for advancing to the second round, $40,000 for continuing to move on through the next two rounds each, $100,000 more if he reaches a Final Four and $200,000 for appearing in the National Championship Game.

But before Hodge can win on a national level, he needs to find success within the Big 12. If Hodge claims first place during the regular season, he will receive $40,000. If he wins the conference tournament, he will get $40,000. Hodge will even be rewarded with $30,000 for being the runner-up and losing in the Big 12 Tournament Championship Game.

Hodge will gain $30,000 for being named Big 12 Coach of the Year and $50,000 if he adds “National Coach of the Year” to his resume.
