Women’s basketball coach Mark Kellogg is now signed with WVU through 2030 due to an unannounced contract extension agreed to last July and an automatic extension he earned this season.

An amendment to Kellogg’s contract was agreed to on July 18, 2024, that, in part, added an additional year to Kellogg’s initial five-year contract with WVU. The amendment included a one-year extension through the 2028-29 as well as several other incentives.

The extension was not announced by WVU at the time it was signed and was obtained by WV Sports Now through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Included in the amendment was a one-time automatic extension clause that would trigger if WVU finished in the top six in the Big 12 standings in either the 2024-25 or 2025-26 seasons. The Mountaineers finished in a tie for fourth place this season, activating the extension and signing Kellogg through the 2029-30 season. The additional year includes a substantial increase to Kellogg’s base salary, increasing it from $500,000 in 2029 to $700,000 in 2030.

Kellogg also receives supplemental compensation in addition to his base salary, which increases by $25,000 each year of his contract. It will rise to $200,000 in 2030, bringing his total salary for that season to $900,000. For comparison, his total salary in 2029 will be $675,000 ($500,000 base plus $175,000).

The amendment also included an annual retention incentive of $50,000. Kellogg received $50,000 for still being with West Virginia on Sept. 1 2024 and will receive the same amount every subsequent year he is employed by WVU on May 1.

In addition to the automatic extension, Kellogg also earned several performance incentives outlined in the amendment. He earned $15,000 for making the NCAA Tournament and $20,000 for playing in the second round. He also earned $10,000 for the team reaching 25 wins. He can earn up to $10,000 if the program sold more than 2,000 season tickets this season and an additional $10,000 if the team’s APR is over 950.

Unchanged in the amendment, Kellogg’s buyout should he leave WVU is still 50% of his remaining base salary. The increase he earned with the additional year in 2030 raises a potential buyout substantially. If Kellogg were to leave this offseason, his buyout would be approximately $1.35 million. Should Kellogg leave for another Big 12 team, his buyout would be 100% of his remaining base salary, $2.7 million this offseason.

For a related story, Mark Kellogg thinks the next step for WVU is hosting NCAA Tournament games.
