Honor Huff Drills 8 Triples in WVU Basketball Win Over Lafayette
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior guard Honor Huff was red-hot from deep Monday, making eight three-pointers in the WVU basketball team’s 81-59 win over Lafayette.
The Mountaineers started on defense but forced an out of bounds turnover. Huff immediately took advantage on the next play with a three-pointer from the right wing.
Lafayette battled back and tied the game at 11-11 after being down 8-2. WVU shot a high volume from three-point range early, starting 2-8 at the 11:29 mark with the only makes being from Huff.
Lorient put WVU on top 13-11 with an inside score before Butler made an and-one layup, but missed the free throw.
Freshman forward DJ Thomas stepped up for the Mountaineers. He went on a 7-0 run on his own with an and-one layup as well for a 20-13 WVU lead.
Junior guard Morris Ugusuk drilled a three-pointer and Christian Humphrey responded with one as well. WVU extended its lead with a 7-0 run capped off by a deep catch-and-shoot three from Huff.
Huff added two more threes to end the half with the last being a fading shot with four seconds left. He led the Mountaineers with 15 points for a 36-25 halftime lead.
Lorient opened the second half with an inside score and Floyd followed with a layup. However, Huff took over once more with two free throws separated by a second-chance layup by Thomas.
At the first media timeout of the second half, WVU led 48-31.
The Mountaineers kept the ball rolling out of the timeout with a dunk and layup from Thomas in consecutive possessions.
WVU’s offense sputtered after Huff’s eight three-pointer as Lafayette went on an 11-2 run for a 60-43 lead going into the eight-minute media timeout.
WVU closed the game out as Thomas led all scorers with 25 and Huff followed with 24.
WVU basketball will take the court again at 6:30 p.m. on Friday when it plays Clemson in the first round of the Shriner’s Children’s Charleston Classic in Charleston, S.C.
