Jerry West is a Wheeling, Dealing Front Office Machine

Jerry West’s brilliance has extended long beyond his playing days. The work that he has done in the front offices of four different NBA franchises is becoming the stuff of legends and just before 2:00 AM this morning, another stellar move with his fingerprints on it was made official.

The additions that Jerry West made during his time running the Los Angeles Lakers are hard to forget considering he built one of the greatest dynasties in league history. First signing Shaquille O’Neal as a free agent and then trading for Kobe Bryant on draft day, he started a new golden era in LA. After a tenure at the helm of the Memphis Grizzlies, West moved into an advisory role with the Golden State Warriors where he helped oversee some of the most important decisions in franchise history. Not only as an instrumental part of signing Kevin Durant, but also putting his job on the line to keep the Warriors from trading Klay Thompson, West was one of the architects of multiple NBA championships.

Just in the last few years, the Logo decided he needed a new challenge and moved down the coast to join the executive board of the Los Angeles Clippers.  Everywhere Jerry West has gone, he’s made a splash move along the way. Under the cover of darkness last night, the Clippers made off with one of the biggest hauls in recent memory, simultaneously picking up reigning Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard via free agency and trading for perennial All-Star Paul George. Success has followed Jerry West almost everywhere he has gone as an executive. With two MVP candidates in the fold now, we’ll see if it comes with him to LA as well.

When it comes to NBA executives, there is no way Jerry West cannot be considered one of the very best of all time. There is a rarefied air that includes the likes of Red Auerbach and Pat Riley that must include the West Virginia native for all he has done to build teams into contenders. We will now see if a third Jerry West dynasty can rise up in Los Angeles.
