Michael Hawkins Jr. Fits the West Virginia QB Mold | WVU Football All 105
All 105 is a West Virginia Sports Now series profiling each member of the 2026 WVU Football Roster.
Placed in a competition with incumbent Scotty Fox Jr. upon arrival, Michael Hawkins Jr. fits the exact type of mold Rich Rodriguez looks for in his ideal quarterbacks.
In two seasons with the Sooners, the 6-foot-1, 203-pound Hawkins completed a total of 91-of-147 passes for 950 yards with six touchdown passes to two interceptions. He added 262 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
A four-star recruit from the 2024 class, Hawkins drew offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Cincinnati, Coastal Carolina, Memphis, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina State, North Texas, Penn State, SMU, TCU, Texas Tech, Virginia Tech and a several others out of high school.
As a dual- threat prospect, Hawkins totaled 4,211 yards and 55 touchdowns to just three interceptions with Emerson High School.
3 • Michael Hawkins, redshirt sophomore quarterback
Last Year: Hawkins appeared in two games with Oklahoma.
Stats: He completed 15-of-27 passes for 167 yards, three touchdowns with a long pass of 32 yards.
Post-Camp Outlook: Hawkins looked both poised at times and rusty during spring ball. He showed his athleticism and appeared to be in shape, but was more polished as a runner than a thrower and missed some open targets in the scrimmage before the concert at the Gold-Blue Festival.
Projected Role: While WV Sports Now currently projects Scotty Fox to be named the starting quarterback, Hawkins is very likely to see the field, at least for particular packages, as well. Rodriguez has made it clear he’s willing to play multiple quarterbacks aside from due to injury if they both can help the team win. It’s also certainly possible Hawkins wins the starting job outright, especially consider his NIL price tag as a transfer addition.
Accolades, Highlights: As a four-star recruit in the 2024 class, Hawkins earned many honors during his high school career. He was named a 2023 Elite 11 Finalist, earned quarterback MVP honors at the 2023 Rivals Camp in Dallas, was the accuracy challenge award winner at the 2023 Under Armour Next All-America Dallas camp and was a 2022 5-6A First-Team All-District selection and 2021 District 5-6A Offensive Newcomer of the Year while at Allen High.
