WVU Football HC Neal Brown

The closer we get to the season, the more betting odds start rolling in. And these aren’t just for which team is going to win their first game, but also extend to which head coach is going to be fired first. That’s where WVU head coach Neal Brown comes in.

Brown is no stranger to being high up on oddsmakers lists for coaches on the hot seat, but he’s now moved all the way to the top, according to Bookies.com.

After receiving +550 odds from Sports Daily just a couple of weeks ago, Brown is now leading the pack. Brown is currently at +250. He’s followed by Dino Babers at +400 and Jeff Haley at +600. The only other Big 12 coach on this list is Brent Venables, who will be guiding the Sooners through their final Big 12 season in 2023 before they jump to the SEC, at +5000.

First College Football Coach Fired Odds
Neal Brown – West Virginia +250 (28.6%)
Dino Babers – Syracuse +400 (20%)
Jeff Haley – Boston College +600 (14.3%)
Tom Allen – Indiana +600 (14.3%)
Danny Gonzalez – New Mexico +800 (11.1%)
Justin Wilcox – Cal +1200 (7.7%)
Ryan Silverfield – Memphis +1200 (7.7%)
Jimbo Fisher – Texas A&M +2000 (4.8%)
Mike Bloomgren – Rice +2000 (4.8%)
Brent Venables – Oklahoma +5000 (1.9%)

As he enters his fifth season as West Virginia’s head coach, the amount of people still trusting the climb has drastically decreased compared to at any other point in his tenure and he can’t afford to do anything but win from now on. He has a losing record of 22-25, only two bowl appearances and only one bowl victory. Brown has also been ranked as the worst coach in the Big 12 by Athlon Sports.

Asti: Dissecting Good, Bad, Ugly of Neal Brown’s Tenure at West Virginia

Brown’s tenure has been among the worst periods for the Mountaineers since the 1970’s. None of that is opinion or piling on, it’s just the fact of the situation right now. The schedule has been more difficult than some of his peers at similar programs, but it’s also not getting any easier in 2023.

In a related story, Neal Brown was ranked as the worst coach in the Big 12 by Athlon Sports.

Brown also opened up about his full tenure during a talk with WVSN’s Mike Asti.
