Owen Schmitt Issues Apology for Actions at WVU-OSU Game

Realizing the error of his ways, WVU legend Owen Schmitt issued a public apology for his actions while attending the Mountaineers’ 41-24 loss to Oklahoman State.

Schmitt was removed from the field by security on Saturday night. From there, he was escorted back to his seat, and as he said, provided “a chance to calm down” away from the field area.

“Last night at the game I made a bad choice and let my emotions and tailgating get in the way of an electric atmosphere at Mountaineer Field,” Schmitt wrote as part of statement he posted on social media the next day.

He even acknowledged that his actions placed the program in a difficult position.

“As someone who wore the flying WV with pride, I hold myself to a higher standard and will take steps to ensure that I handle my next visit professionally as the program deserves!” Schmitt added.

Schmitt became one of the most beloved Mountaineers in his three seasons at WVU from 2005-07. During that time, he racked up 1,003 yards and scored 13 rushing touchdowns from as a fullback. He also caught 32 passes for 288 yards and was part of three bowl wins, helping West Virginia capture a Sugar Bowl, Gator Bowl and Fiesta Bowl trophy.
