Report: WVU to Part Ways with Director of Athletics Shane Lyons

Published

on

As first reported by WV MetroNews’ Hoppy Kercheval and ESPN’s Pete Thamel, West Virginia University has decided to part ways with Director of Athletics Shane Lyons. The reports state that a combination of budget issues and the struggle from the football program led to the dismissal of Lyons.

Lyons was first hired by his alma mater back in 2015 and served in his position for seven years.

Kercheval reports that President of West Virginia University Gordon Gee met with Lyons yesterday. Lyons was offered to stay within the athletic department as an associate vice president, to which Lyons rejected the offer. In Kercheval’s report he described the parting as “does not appear to be amicable.”

WVU Vice President for Strategic Initiatives Rob Alsop is expected to serve as the interim Director of Athletics as the university will search nationwide for a new AD, according to Kercheval.

Back in April 2021, Lyons announced a two-year extension of WVU football head coach Neal Brown. Since that extension, Brown has posted a 10-13 record, reaching the Guaranteed Rate Bowl last season. No decision has been made on Brown’s status with the university.

WV Sports Now will keep up-to-date with the latest news on the hiring of a new Director of Athletics.
