West Virginia Ranked No. 25 in AP Poll

The West Virginia basketball team broke into the Top 25 rankings in the latest Associated Press poll.

The Mountaineers have started the season 9-1, only losing a Dec. 7 matchup with St. John’s 70-68. Since that loss WVU has won two straight games over Austin Peay and Nicholls.

West Virginia was also ranked No. 12 in the first NET rankings with the number nine strength of schedule. KenPom.com ranks WVU No. 25 in adjusted efficiency.

WVU’s best win this season is over Wichita State, ranked 14 in the NET, 74-63 to win the Cancun Challenge.

Freshman forward Oscar Tshiebwe is leading the Mountaineers in scoring this season, averaging 12.3 points per game. Jermaine Haley (11.1), Derek Culver (11) and Emmitt Matthews Jr. (10.6) are all averaging more than 10 points per game.

Culver (9.6) and Tshiebwe (9.5) are numbers one and two in the Big 12 conference for rebounding.

West Virginia’s next game is on the road against Youngstown State on Dec. 21. After that, the Mountaineers will play Ohio State in Cleveland on Dec. 29 and then start Big 12 play against Kansas on Jan. 4.
