WVU Basketball Offense Fades in Second Half in Loss at TCU
The WVU basketball team scored just five points in the final eight minutes of play against TCU Saturday, falling 60-54 in Fort Worth.
TCU struck first just 18 seconds into the game, but WVU knotted it up at the 16:26 mark with a layup from fifth-year guard Chance Moore. The Mountaineer run grew to 7-2 after a layup by senior forward Brenen Lorient and a three-pointer from senior guard Treysen Eaglestaff.
Eaglestaff cashed in from three again with a shot off the bank for a 12-6 WVU lead with 11:28 left in the first half.
The Horned Frogs took the lead again with a 7-0 run, forcing a WVU timeout at the 5:18 mark. They added a three out of the timeout for a 26-21 lead.
Senior center Harlan Obioha scored a layup, but TCU had four more points before senior guard Honor Huff added a transition layup. Obioha had two layup attempts to end the half off an inbound play in the last five seconds, but missed both after grabbing his own rebound. WVU went into the half down 30-25.
It took WVU until the 15:37 mark to score a field goal after a layup from Eaglestaff. Huff followed with a three-pointer on the next possession, tying the game at 34-34. WVU took its first lead in the second half when Moore recovered his own rebound for a second-chance shot at 38-37 with 12:26 remaining.
A three-pointer from TCU junior forward Xavier Edmonds gave TCU the lead at the 12:07 mark at 40-39. However, WVU regained the lead with a layup by Lorient and grew the lead to six points with 8:03 remaining at 49-43.
TCU stormed back, scoring five straight points before a three by Huff. Another run by TCU made its lead 56-52 with 1:36 remaining. Over the course of seven minutes and 38 seconds, the only shot WVU had made was Huff’s three.
Lorient added a layup with 25 seconds left, but TCU closed out the game 60-54.
