WVU Football quarterbacks Garrett Greene and Nicco Marchiol

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – WVU head coach Neal Brown finally offered some new insight about West Virginia’s most important position battle. Brown addressed his thoughts on the battle between quarterbacks Garrett Greene and Nicco Marchiol during a press conference with the media on Wednesday.

Brown, who has not talked much publicly about Greene and Marchiol in recent weeks, provided some insight on how he feels both quarterbacks have been performing at practice so far.

“Starting with Nicco (Marchiol), Nicco is making growth as a redshirt freshman. Yesterday about half way through practice was probably as poor decision making as he’s made and then he was able to correct it, which I think is a sign of mental toughness. And he went a stretch there where he some bad decisions and then four out of his next six plays were explosive plays,” said Brown.

“To see him take an ass chewing and then be able to bounce back and answer, I was really encouraged with that.”

Brown then touched on the more experienced and true dual-threat Greene. “I think Garrett had a couple of big runs today in a team period. We’re not tackling those guys but he had a couple big runs. And then he made really a tight throw down in the red zone.”

In the past, Brown has hinted that the winner of WVU’s quarterback competition will be whoever minimizes mistakes. He has also said that he is not against using whoever does not end up as the starter some throughout the season as well.

To no surprise, Brown made sure to say he is not close to naming a starter and he’s even keeping who may have the edge close to the vest right now. The belief is Brown, much like last year, will not name his quarterback until days before the Mountaineer take the field to kickoff the season.
