MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia head coach Neal Brown mentioned that his program won’t add a quarterback from the Transfer Portal during his National Signing Day press conference on Wednesday afternoon. Brown said quarterbacks Garrett Greene and Nicco Marchiol will compete with each other during the spring.

“We’re going with these two guys we got [Greene and Marchiol] and then we’ve got Sean [Boyle] coming in,” Brown said. “We’ve done the portal thing, we’ve done the transfer thing. We’re in the mode that we’re going to develop the guys that we have here. At this point in time I don’t anticipate taking a transfer quarterback.”

Brown praised Greene and Marchiol for their development and play at the end of the season. Brown, who is entering his fifth season as head coach for WVU, says that Greene and Marchiol will compete with each other during the spring for the starting spot.

“Garrett has shown a lot of growth. He played well, wins the Oklahoma game and starts the Oklahoma State game. Nicco comes in at the end of the Oklahoma State game. Really pleased with his development over the last 12 months.”

Since Brown took over for Dana Holgorsen in 2019, his staff has went out and picked up quarterbacks from the transfer portal. Jarret Doege (Bowling Green) and Austin Kendall (Oklahoma) were a huge part of Brown’s quarterback position his first couple seasons. Last offseason, West Virginia picked up JT Daniels from Georgia. Daniels played in 10 games for the Mountaineers, recording 2,107 passing yards with 13 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Now, Brown and his coaching staff will roll within house and rely on Greene and Marchiol in 2023.
