WVU QB Garrett Greene to FSU Transfer LB Amari Gainer: ‘Let’s Run it Back!’

If there’s any way West Virginia can convince Florida State transfer Amari Gainer to become a Mountaineer, it may very well be to reunite with his former high school teammate Garrett Greene.

The WVU quarterback, who will be competing with Nicco Marchiol to open the 2023 season under center, reminder Gainer about their time at Lawton Chiles High School in Tallahassee, Florida on Twitter Monday night. Greene quoted a tweet from an account dedicated to highlighting players from Lawton Chiles High School to help with their recruiting by simply saying “let’s run it back!” and tagging Gainer. The linebacker then offered an emoji of eyes as a reply.

West Virginia has been heavily targeting Gainer as a veteran to add to their defense after he decided to move on from FSU and enter the Transfer Portal. The Mountaineers extended an offer to Gainer during a home visit a few weeks ago. He then made a trip to Morgantown as a follow up.

Gainer would bring some necessary experience at the major conference level to a WVU defense that will be without several leaders from the 2022 defense come 2023. Despite being limited in 2022 due to injury, Gainer was the active leader in career tackles at Florida State with 210 tackles in his five total seasons. He also has 19 tackles for loss, six sacks and five forced fumbles. He played in seven games this past season, making one start and recorded 17 tackles and a sack.

Even though Greene was already at WVU, Gainer decided to stay home and go to FSU out of high school. But it’s now possible the two Lawton Chiles High Schools alums could be on the same team once again. Either way, Mountaineer fans will know if Greene’s influence matters very soon. Gainer tweeted he will announce his decision and next college destination on Dec. 30.
