WVU Target FSU LB Transfer Amari Gainer Offers Date for Decision

West Virginia now knows when they will learn if they will be adding one of their most coveted transfers.

Florida State transfer linebacker Amari Gainer, who has been talking with WVU in recent weeks, announced on Twitter that he will be signing with a new program on Dec. 30. The Mountaineers extended an offer to Gainer during a home visit a few weeks ago. He then made a trip to Morgantown as a follow up.

Gainer would bring some necessary experience at the major conference level to a WVU defense that will be without several leaders from the 2022 defense come 2023. Despite being limited in 2022 due to injury, Gainer was the active leader in career tackles at Florida State with 210 tackles in his five total seasons. He also has 19 tackles for loss, six sacks and five forced fumbles. He played in seven games this past season, making one start and recorded 17 tackles and a sack.

Some have wondered why Gainer is leaving a FSU program that made a major turnaround in 2022, but he released a statement while making his intentions to transfer known.

“To all my teammates, thanks for becoming my brothers and being what I needed while here at Florida State University,” Gainer said in his post. “To the coaches/trainers that have helped develop me as a person and player, thank you. To my fans/supporters I want to thank you for your endless support. Now it’s time to do what’s best for my future and family. I will be entering the transfer portal as a grad transfer. God bless.”
