WVU Soccer Earns First Win of Season
The No. 23 WVU soccer team picked up its first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over St. Bonaventure, Monday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers improve to 1-1-0 on the season while the Bonnies fall to 1-1-0.
Sophomore Julen Recalde’s first goal as a Mountaineer proved to be the game-winner while graduate student Aurélien Cormier and sophomore Sammie Walker collected assists. Redshirt sophomore Toby Mawer made two saves to record his first career shutout.
Overall, WVU outshot St. Bonaventure, 17-2, and had a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. The Mountaineers also had nine corner kicks compared to just one for the Bonnies.
Walker had the only shot on goal in the first 45 minutes, but nothing came of it as the game remained scoreless at the break.
In the second half, Recalde had a chance in the 58th minute, but his shot was saved. In the 62nd minute, he converted off a cross from Cormier. Walker nearly scored himself, but his deflection did not throw off Recalde as he buried his shot in the roof of the net.
Mawer had to make just one more save once the Mountaineers took the lead, securing the shutout.
West Virginia will be back on Friday, Aug. 28, at No. 14 UNC Greensboro. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
