Former WVU Stars Tre Mitchell, Toby Okani to Play for Best Virginia in TBT

Losing a top player like Erik Stevenson to NBA Summer League meant Best Virginia would have to fill a big void ahead of the upcoming TBT. The WVU alumni team has done just that with the addition of two new players, as announced on Thursday.

Best Virginia has added former Mountaineers Toby Okani and Tre Mitchell to a roster that already includes John Flowers as player/general manager, Kedrian Johnson, Jermaine Haley Jr., Eduardo Andre and Wesley Harris. Best Virginia’s final roster will be announced next week.

Okani joined the West Virginia men’s basketball program for the 2024–25 season as a graduate transfer, following stints at Duquesne and Illinois-Chicago. He started all 32 games for the Mountaineers in his final year of eligibility, averaging 8.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.

Tre Mitchell played one season at West Virginia (2022–23), where he averaged 11.7 points and 5.5 rebounds while helping lead the Mountaineers to the NCAA Tournament. Prior to his time in Morgantown, he spent two seasons at UMass and one at Texas before finishing his college career at Kentucky. Since graduating, Mitchell has gone on to play professionally for Löwen Braunschweig in Germany.

Former WVU star Jarrod West will make his return as head coach.

West, who played at WVU from 1994-98, was recently revealed as the new head coach of the Best Virginia team in this summer’s TBT. He also has been recently serving as the head coach of Notre Dame High School in Clarksburg.

West is remembered fondly by Mountaineer fans for hitting the game-winning shot in the second round of the 1998 NCAA Tournament to beat Cincinnati and send West Virginia to the Sweet 16.

West’s son by the same name will also play for Best Virginia despite being a Marshall basketball alum.

The TBT returns to West Virginia this year as the 2025 West Virginia Regional will be played in the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center from July 18-23. Charleston previously hosted TBT regionals in 2021 and 2022. Best Virginia will open against Dubois Dream.

Should they advance to the second round, Best Virginia would face the winner of Herd That (Marshall Alumni) and Sikh Warriors on July 20 at 5 p.m. on FS1. The West Virginia Regional championship game is Tuesday, July 22 at 7 p.m. ET.
