Mountaineers Take Game 3 from No. 3 Oregon State and Avoid Series Sweep
The West Virginia Mountaineers (6-5) handed the No. 3 Oregon State Beavers (10-1) their first loss of the season Sunday afternoon in Corvallis, OR. WVU had dropped the first two games of the series and was able to avoid the sweep with a 2-0 win over the Beavers.
The Mountaineers got both of their runs in the second inning. Kevin Brophy started the inning with a home run over the right field wall and a two-out solo shot from Paul McIntosh gave the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead.
The West Virginia pitching staff was able to bounce back after giving up a combined 14 runs in the first two games. Starting pitcher Kade Strowd went six and a third only giving up one hit, then Beau Lowery got Troy Claunch to hit into a 6-4-3 double play.
Sam Kessler came in the eighth inning and closed the game out for the Mountaineers. Kessler gave up a double in each inning but stayed in control and got out of each inning unscathed.
West Virginia will host their first home series of the season against Kent State. The first of a three game series will be held Friday afternoon at 3:00 pm inside Monongalia County Ballpark.
