West Virginia Crushed by No. 3 Oregon State
The West Virginia Mountaineers (5-4) dropped game one of a three-game series against the No. 3 Oregon State Beavers 9-2 (9-0).
Oregon State jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after a disastrous second inning. Starting pitcher Alek Manoah began the inning walking clean-up hitter Tyler Malone. Beau Philip followed it up poking a single through the right side. Joe Casey tried to advance the runners on a bunt, but Andrew Zitel and Phillip Dull got the force at third.
Andy Armstrong laid a bunt down and Manoah trying to get it to second base for a chance at a double play couldnโt make the throw, loading the bases with one out.
Manoah went on to hit the next two batters and a wild pitch scored Armstrong from third.
Now with two on and one out, Kyler McMahan doubled down the right field line field line clearing the bases. McMahan eventually came in on a wild pitch.
Philip came back around and hit a lined drive into the gap in right-center scoring Adley Rutschman making the seventh run in the inning.
West Virginiaโs Tyler Doanes scored on a wild pitch in the sixth after three straight walks from Kevin Abel. Oregon State added two more runs in the bottom of the inning.
Ivan Gonzalez hit his second homerun of the year in the eighth as Oregon State takes the seven-point win.
The Mountaineers and Beavers meet in game two on Saturday at 4:35 pm est.
