This past weekend marked the first weekend of WVU football camp with recruits in town for official visits.

Head coach Neal Brown and the West Virginia program showed off everything being a Mountaineer can offer to top tier high school players. This group of players was highlighted by class of 2024 four-star quarterback Samaj Jones and four-star defensive end Obbina Onwuka.

Here are some notable recruits who completed their official visits with WVU over the weekend.

Samaj Jones (2024 4-Star – QB)

Jones, a four-star quarterback recruit who attends the prestigious St. Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia, recently narrowed down his list of schools to a top four. West Virginia is on that list with Cincinnati, Penn State and Oklahoma.

As a junior, Jones threw for 2,525 yards and 32 passing touchdowns to go along with 740 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns as St. Josephs Prep went on to win the Pennsylvania 6A State Championship.

Obinna Onwuka (2024 4-Star – DE)

Onwuka, listed at 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds, is ranked as the No. 12 player in Maryland, the No. 30 edge-rusher, and the No. 359 player nationally, according to 247Sports composite rankings.

In an interview with WVSN back in January, Onwuka talked about what he’s looking for in a school. “Academics, the culture and the mutual support of for students” Onkuwa said are the main traits he wants to find in a college a program before fully committing.

Richard James (2024 3-Star – DL)

Already committed to WVU, James still took his official visit with West Virginia over the weekend. James (6-foot-1, 270 pounds) is ranked a 3-star prospect from Philadelphia, picking WVU over Ole Miss, Penn State, Temple and Texas A&M.

Makai Byerson (2024 4-Star DE)

Listed at 6-foot-5 AND 250 pounds, Byerson plays for Manchester High School in Midlothian, Virginia. He also has offers from Boston College, Duke, East Carolina, James Madison, Kentucky, Liberty, Marshall, Old Dominion, Rutgers, Tennessee and Virginia Tech.

Demeco Kennedy (2024 3-Star – DL)

Kennedy (6-foot-2, 285 pounds) is a class of 2024 product from Lexington, Kentucky. He received a WVU offer in December and is regarded as a three-star player by most national recruiting outlets. Kennedy ranks firmly as a top 10 recruit by Rivals, 247 Sports and On3.com.

Kyle Altuner (2024 3-Star – OL)

Altuner (6-foot-2, 290 pounds) is classified as a three-star offensive line recruit from Maryland.

These are far from the only recruit to visit the West Virginia program recently and many others are scheduled to be in Morgantown this week.
