While WVU football has been enduring a down period in recent years, West Virginia’s finances and willingness to spend money could provide a lifeline for the Mountaineers.

If you aren’t willing to spend money, you aren’t going to win on a constant basis in college football. That’s something that’s becoming more and more evident based on the makeup of big time college athletics today.

According to data released by CBS Sports, WVU is only behind the two departing big brands in terms of money spent on recruiting by current Big 12 schools. West Virginia has spent $971,286, which is ahead of the $930,264 by Texas Tech.

It’s worth noting, WVU is still a long ways away from where Oklahoma and Texas are financially, but both programs are leaving the Big 12 for the SEC.

Sending doesn’t automatically mean success, and even the Sooners are coming off an uncharacteristically poor 2022 season despite shelling out well over $2.6 million, but this does show a serious effort led by athletic director Wren Baker to what needs to be done from a financial perspective. Baker’s ability to generate revenue and handle money properly are two key reasons he was hired in the first place.

It’s possible WVU’s willingness to spend could be the school’s path back to competing as a national contender.
