WV Black Bears Add Slew of Division I Players to Roster

With the 2021 college baseball season nearing its end, more and more top-tier college players will be able to join MLB Draft League rosters as their college teams finish up play. Along with six WVU players, the West Virginia Black Bears have added a number of Division I college players to their online roster. These players will be able to join the Black Bears for competition upon the conclusion of their college or high school seasons.

Pitchers

  • LHP Cam Baumann (Iowa)
    • Redshirt-junior, went 4-5 with a 4.16 ERA in 11 starts. Pitched 62 2/3 innings with 52 strikeouts and only 13 walks. Throws a fastball, changeup, curveball and a slurve.
  • RHP Lane Flamm (Xavier)
    • Junior All-BIG EAST honoree. Went 4-5 with a 4.41 ERA in 12 starts. Struck out 67 batters in 65 1/3 innings with 28 walks.
  • LHP Logan Freeman (McLennan CC)
    • A freshman Texas A&M recruit. Made seven appearances this season with an 11.00 ERA. Struck out 15 and walked 11 in nine innings. Mainly uses a fastball/curveball combo with an occasional changeup.
  • LHP Tyler Grauer (Indiana State)
    • A fifth-year senior, had a 5.29 ERA in 14 appearances, four starts, this season. Had a sub-2.00 ERA in 2019 and 2020. Has a fastball, changeup, curveball mix.
  • RHP Michael Hobbs (Saint Mary’s)
    • A senior, had a 0.72 ERA in 19 appearances with six saves. struck out 28 batters in 25 innings with 10 walks.
  • RHP Carlos Lomeli (Saint Mary’s)
    • A senior, went 5-6 with a 4.21 ERA in 11 starts. Pitched 72 2/3 innings with 66 strikeouts and 20 walks.
  • RHP Ben Probst (Iowa)
    • Redshirt-sophomore, had a 3.68 ERA in nine appearances. Pitched 7 1/3 innings with three strikeouts and 10 walks. Uses a fastball and a slider.
  • RHP Jay Schueler (Parkland College)
    • COVID-freshman, made 12 appearances, seven starts, with a 5-3 record and 1.77 ERA. Struck out 77 batters and walked 24 in 45 2/3 innings.
  • RHP Joshua South (Belmont)
    • Named the Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Pitcher of the Year. Went 4-6 with a 4.69 ERA as a sophomore. Pitched 78 2/3 innings with 62 strikeouts and 22 walks. Fastball/slider pitch mix.
  • RHP Mason Studstill (Florida Gulf Coast)
    • Drafted by Cleveland in the 22nd round in 2016. The senior went 7-3 with a 3.02 ERA in 13 starts this year. Had 73 strikeouts and 32 walks in 83 1/3 innings. Uses a fastball, curveball, slider and changeup.
  • RHP Ethan Sund (North Park)
    • Senior went 4-3 with a 3.74 ERA in 11 starts this season. Had 73 strikeouts and 22 walks in 67 1/3 innings.
  • RHP Drew Talley (Mississippi State)
    • Redshirt-sophomore made four appearances during his first season with MSU. Had a 9.00 ERA in three innings with seven strikeouts.
  • RHP Trent Vietmeier (LSU)
    • Senior from Pittsburgh, had a 4.20 ERA in 17 appearances. Struck out 11 and walked four in 15 innings.

Position Players

  • C/1B Ryan McCoy (Wabash Valley JC)
    • Left-handed freshman, hit .379 this season with 17 doubles, 13 home runs and 63 RBI.
  • C/OF Max Wright (Indiana State)
    • A left-handed fifth-year senior who hit .311 this season in 46 games. Had 15 home runs with 39 RBI and 43 runs scored.
  • 1B/OF Grant Hussey (Parkersburg South HS, WV)
    • An in-state WVU commit from Washington, WV.
  • INF Christian Lucio (Florida Southwest College)
    • Redshirt-sophomore hit .330 in 57 games this season. Hit 12 doubles and 12 home runs with 48 RBI and 54 runs scored. Stole 26 bases.
  • 3B/OF Garrett Martin (McLennan CC)
    • Sophomore from Denver, hit .351 this season with 15 doubles and 19 home runs. Collected 63 RBI and scored 64 runs.
  • INF Freylin Minyety (Wabash Valley JC)
    • Sophomore, hit .430 with 14 doubles, nine home runs, 72 RBI and 7 runs scored. Also stole 20 bases.
  • OF/3B Joe Quinones (Somerset Patriots)
    • A 30-year-old journeyman who played at Mercer Community College in 2011. Played several seasons in the independent Pecos League and spent last season with the Somerset Patriots in the Somerset Professional Baseball Series.
  • 3B/1B Vytas Valincius (Baylor HS, TN)
    • No. 2-ranked third baseman in the 2021 recruiting class, committed to South Carolina.
  • OF/SS Amari Bartee (Yavapai College)
    • Sophomore hit .315 this season with 27 extra-base hits. Stole 29 bases and scored 43 runs.
  • OF Damone Hale (Yavapai College)
    • Sophomore led his team with 80 hits, leading to a .398 batting average. Had 12 doubles and 11 home runs with 45 RBI, 34 stolen bases and 70 runs scored.
  • OF Garrett Spain (Austin Peay)
    • 2019 Ohio Valley Freshman of the Year. Now a redshirt-sophomore, hit .315 with 17 extra-base hits this season. Had 37 RBI, 14 stolen bases and scored 32 runs.
