First-year WVU Baseball head coach Steve Sabins continues to add to his coaching staff, naming former Major League Baseball scout Chris Reilly as the Mountaineers’ new Director of Pitching and Pitching Personnel.

Reilly, 43, spent much of the past decade as a scout for the Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox. He also possesses collegiate coaching experience, serving as an assistant coach at Cincinnati and as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Daytona State, a junior college on Florida’s Atlantic Coast.

Reilly’s ability as a talent scout could help the Mountaineers continue to excel at spotting young talents in recruiting and the transfer portal. A former collegiate pitcher himself at both Seton Hall and Oklahoma State, Reilly helped the Daytona State pitching staff set a single-season program record for Earned Run Average during his time there.

In introducing the newest member of his staff, Sabins not only emphasized Reilly’s baseball acumen, but also his temperament as a family man and leader. That family-like atmosphere has been a point of emphasis for the program since the first day that recently retired WVU Baseball head coach Randy Mazey took the helm in 2012, and it seems like it will continue under Sabins.

“Chris Reilly will make our program better,” Sabins said in a press release.

“I have personally relied on Chris’ advice for the last 15 years and I am thrilled for his knowledge, judgement, and vision to impact the lives of our players. He is hardworking, humble, and will consistently do what it takes for our team to be great. He knows what players at the highest level need to look like and what they need to do to get better and will be an asset in recruiting and the development of our pitching staff.”

For a related story, Sabins discussed the transition and future of the program at his introductory press conference.
