WVU Baseball Learns College World Series Draw: Neal Brown Bowl

WVU Baseball learned their opening draw for the College World Series on Saturday, June 6, with the Troy Trojans sweeping their Super Regional against Little Rock. West Virginia played six out of conference games against the Sun Belt in 2026, going a perfect 6-0; while they didn’t face Troy, the league champion, the two universities do share an important tie.

Former WVU football head coach Neal Brown led the Trojans’ football program prior to coming to Morgantown, making for an interesting side story as the Mountaineers head to Omaha. Brown, who now coaches at North Texas, tweeted in support of both baseball programs following their Regional wins.

The Trojans hosted their Super Regional after knocking out national title contenders like Florida and Miami during the opening weekend; they swept Little Rock 2-0, winning 7-2 and 12-2 to punch their ticket for Omaha. Troy finished second in the Sun Belt Tournament and went 38-30 on the season, the first 30-loss team to make it to Omaha in nearly two decades.

As such, WVU Baseball will continue to face a schedule perceived as easy: they managed to duck No. 1 overall seed UCLA, who washed out in the first round, instead hosting — and dominating — Cal Poly. The Mountaineers outscored the Mustangs 29-3 in the series. West Virginia should play their first-ever College World Series game on June 12 or June 13; game times and dates won’t come out until the rest of the eight-team field is finalized.

The opening round of the College World Series is a double elimination bracket similar to the Regional round of the tournament; depending how they perform, the Mountaineers will also face one of North Carolina and Ole Miss.
