MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Putting the depth of the WVU baseball lineup on display, the bottom of the Mountaineers’ order led the way in their 17-1 victory over Cal Poly. Senior right-fielder Ben Lumsden and junior third baseman Tyrus Hall batted eighth and ninth in the lineup, respectively, yet initiated the offense for the Mountaineers.

After hitting an RBI double on Friday, Ben Lumsden started the scoring for West Virginia with a three-run home run in the second inning. Lumsden’s big fly marked his second home run of the season, both coming in the postseason following his initial bomb against Binghamton during the Morgantown Regional.

Lumsden continued his postseason hot streak by hitting another home run, a two-run shot, in the fourth inning and adding a single in the sixth. He finished the game by bringing in five of West Virginia’s 17 runs.

“It’s been awesome, but everybody’s played awesome,” Lumsden said. “Now it’s one through nine that have been unreal.”

Building off his dominant start to the Morgantown Super Regional, Tyrus Hall hit a solo home run directly after Lumsden’s three-run blast. With his grand slam in the first game of the Super Regional, Hall now has seven home runs on the season overall.

“Tyrus is hitting homers, Lumsden’s hitting homers” head coach Steve Sabins said. “It just comes, power definitely comes, and it usually develops later in careers. So I think we’re starting to see some of those players come into that.”

Ben Lumsden and Tyrus Hall’s home runs in the second inning sparked the momentum the Mountaineers needed, as the team finished with 19 hits and 17 runs against Cal Poly. West Virginia’s depth will continue to be crucial as they move on to the College World Series and an opening matchup with Troy.
