WVU Baseball mounted a late inning comeback for the third game in a row on Sunday, June 1, outlasting the Kentucky Wildcats 13-12 in Clemson, S.C. to advance to the Super Regional round of the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row.

Logan Sauve put the Mountaineers in front with a solo home run in the first inning, but the Wildcats answered back immediately, chasing West Virginia starter Robby Porco from the game after just four outs as they raced ahead 4-1. Reese Bassinger entered in an attempt to stop the bleeding but struggled to achieve that goal, allowing five runs (four earned) across 2.2 innings pitched.

The Mountaineers briefly went ahead 7-6 in the fourth inning, hitting around the lineup as eight straight batters reached base safely, then the Wildcats slipped back in front with two more runs as Bassinger and Ben McDougal struggled to record outs. Carson Estridge entered with the bases loaded and one out, escaping the jam with a pair of strikeouts, but a two-run homer and an error that would have ended the inning allowed Kentucky to stretch their lead to 11-7 in the sixth.

The Wildcats padded their lead with a Devin Burkes solo home run in the eighth, and although Armani Guzman and Logan Sauve singled in the home half of the inning, a pair of outs made a rally seem unlikely. Instead, the Mountaineers batted around the order once again, seven consecutive batters reaching safely via single or walk as they crushed Kentucky’s chances slowly.

Ben Lumsden tied the game with a two-run single, then Guzman put the Mountaineers in front with his second hit of the inning, plating the eventual game-winner for the second time in three games. Griffin Kirn entered for the save just two days after a 6.1 inning, 118 pitch outing against the Wildcats, working around a one-out single to slam the door.

WVU Baseball advances to face the winner of the LSU Regional between the Tigers and Arkansas-Little Rock.
