WVU Baseball Signs Rising Star INF Matt Ineich

Just a few days after locking up his commitment, the WVU baseball program has officially signed transfer infielder Matt Ineich, a rising sophomore with three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Ineich primarily played second base at Ohio, slashing .387/.467/.514 with nine doubles and three home runs across 36 games.

An on base machine, Ineich acquitted himself well during his first taste of Division I baseball, although the Big 12 will provide him with stiffer competition than the MAC did. He also succeeded on nine of 14 stolen base attempts.

Standing 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds, Ineich doesn’t have the frame to add much power, but that isn’t really an expectation at second base anyway: any homers he adds in addition to his ability to get on base will just be icing on the cake.

Ineich joins a West Virginia squad fresh off its best season in program history, posting a 44-16 record, an outright Big 12 regular season title and a second consecutive NCAA Tournament Regional championship. With the Mountaineers trending up, it’s not surprising to see them pulling in new transfers in the days after their season ends.
