Before WVU women’s basketball head coach Mark Kellogg could preview his team’s opening round matchup while talking with the media on Tuesday, he felt he had to address his viral comments about Caitlin Clark.

“I told them, win one and let’s send Caitlin Clark packing,” Kellogg said at the WVU watch party.

Kellogg explained what led up to his comments about the Iowa super-star and his intentions behind them.

“When the announcement came, there was some disappointment with some people in the room, thinking we got the wrong seed. They thought we might be a little higher,” he explained. “I got to talking about Princeton and we went through all of that, what we knew about them, which wasn’t a ton at the time. Then we talked about if you win you advance you play Iowa and Caitlin Clark.”

First things first for Kellogg and the Mountaineers – a matchup with 9-seed Princeton. The winner will then likely face Clark and Iowa, assuming they advance as well. Kellogg led WVU to a 24-7 record (12-6, Big 12) in his first season in Morgantown.
